March 2020, the world went into what could be considered as a version of apocalypse as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus). At least as close to apocalypse as can be described for the general population.
In the last Saturday of February or the first Saturday in March, I went to my local Sam’s Club to get some toilet paper and some ground beef. I was about halfway through my last roll of toilet paper and I couldn’t put off the purchase any longer and I wanted to make some chili and needed beef. I work from home and I must have missed a memo – the Sam’s had limits on bottled water and people were buying toilet paper and paper towels like it was going out of style. It was absolutely mind-boggling the reaction. Granted, I don’t watch the news stations, so it is possible that I didn’t get some kind of notification in what I saw on my social media sort of feeds and the news areas I check randomly. I just was doing a normal run to the grocery store.
Seeing the shopping carts of people it was amazing – people weren’t this proactive in getting ready for a hurricane. People were buying at least two 50-packs of toilet paper and paper towels, the meat department was getting picked clean like it was swarmed by buzzards, and the dairy section got picked clean as well. Since that trip to the grocery store, each day seems to get more and more panic buyers hoarding supplies and food.
I have been working from home for five and a half years, so perhaps it is because I have that time that I am amazed at what people are buying. Given this time working from home and my understanding of myself, I put in systems long ago to setup my environment to be beneficial for the lifestyle I want. Granted, it is only me so it doesn’t affect anyone else. However, I know that if given the opportunity, I can easily eat a party size bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos in an hour, I can easily scarf a party size box of Little Debbie Oatmeal Cremes and Nutty Bars – those open and eat foods have been strategically eliminated or greatly limited in my house. I generally keep things that require it to be prepared and cooked in some way in order to eat it to be more conscious of my eating patterns – am I actually hungry or am I just bored or something else?
As of St. Patrick’s Day 2020, major cities have shut down – San Francisco is on a 30 day city-wide shut down, I think NYC just enacted a 90 day shut down, Florida schools (at least K-12, not sure about colleges) are closed through April 15, Regal Cinemas closed all locations until further notice, Bars & Nightclubs are closed until further notice, restaurants are pickup or drive thru only, banks appear to be starting to be drive thru only, and people are being setup to work from home, others are being temporarily or permanently laid off.
With the self-quarantine/isolation/social distancing taking place, there are many expecting a large number of births in December 2020 – wonder if they will be called the Coronakids? Maybe name variations of “Corona Lime”? Perhaps they will change the Alpha Generation to the Corona Generation?
Events like this is why I try to be prepared – if you have your supplies and setup on a rotation, you don’t need to panic buy and do last minute hoarding, you already have it from the extras picked up during the normal functioning of society.
What I Have Learned
This post is being written on March 18, 2020. There may be updates as things continue to unfold, but here is what I have learned so far regarding living through a global pandemic and general preparation:
- Since I am in Florida, the general guidelines for hurricanes is 3 days of supplies for all persons and pets in the household to function as if there is no power, running water, and it is basically like living in an episode of The Walking Dead (without the Zombies). I have generally taken this guidance as a “bare minimum” and have tried to have at least a week’s worth on hand, especially after what all my friends went through in the Florida Panhandle after Hurricane Michael. With this experience, I will likely be reviewing my setup during the self-isolation and social distancing to alter things to allow for at least a month’s worth of supplies for all people and pets in the household – at the very least on a food basis.
- I am not a very skilled cook and I fully realize that I need to improve those skills.
- I may need to come up with a “Cookbook for Pandemics and Apocalypses”, where I have a list of things to have in the pantry and such for meal creation. The recipes collected will be to create various meals out of those items. Likely with different instructions based on whether power options are available or not for cooking and storage of leftovers. The cookbook would have a front section with an explanation of the cookbook pantry list and recipes inside being for X meals per person, per day for X number of days.
- Although I am not a very skilled cook, I am glad that I have some old cookbooks that have instructions on how to make stuff from scratch.
- This pandemic has a lot of the frozen foods that are opened and cooked in the oven or microwave completely wiped out. The stuff like flour and other pantry staples for making stuff from scratch weren’t picked clean as fast. The bread aisle was a ghost town, but you could still get bags of flour and yeast and other things to make bread from scratch. Further, I am glad that I spent some time in the past figuring out how to properly do yeast for made-from-scratch bread. I am further grateful that I can cook, or at the very least follow a recipe – as that seems to be a highly lacked skill among my millennial age group.
- The banks are still open…for now….but given the situation, it certainly speaks to having some cash on hand and easily accessible for use in the event that they are closed and plastic isn’t an option.
- Anything is better than nothing, but perhaps have your $1,000 emergency fund in cash and hidden somewhere and possibly 3 months of your 6 month expense savings in cash hidden somewhere too.
- If your living situation allows, get a giant freezer in your garage.
- We had one of these in the house when I was growing up. All I have now is the freezer that is part of the fridge in my kitchen. I like the giant freezers since they can generally keep a good bit of stuff in them regardless of size and will keep things cold for a while, even during a power outage (as long as you don’t go in/out frequently). It is good to hold extra cuts of meat when they are on sale, or extra half-gallons of ice cream when it’s on sale, among other frozen items that keep for a while. If you are unable to have a giant freezer, do the best you can with the space you have with your existing fridge freezer.
- Use the time you have to get stuff done that you didn’t have time for before.
- There are a lot of people basically doing the Netflix/Prime Streaming and chill over the time of self-isolation/social distancing. Personally, I am working on cleaning up all the stuff that I have accumulated over time; granted, this has been a long-standing thing, but when the world essentially shuts down, there isn’t a great deal else to do. So get stuff cleaned and organized. For the timing of this one, it sort of allows for an early “spring cleaning”.
- Conversational skills and self-entertainment skills are important.
- Being an introvert by nature, when I am in public I like to observe people. Compared to pre-cell phones, people have steadily stopped talking to each other. At any given table there is a couple – sometimes with kids, and they are all scrolling through their phones, no conversation at all….and now they are all basically stuck in the house together for at least 2 weeks. Amazingly, there is still plenty of alcohol on the grocery stores!
- Additionally, many don’t seem to have board games or even playing cards. Make sure you have a small stash of puzzles, board games, or just a deck or two of cards.
- Make sure you have books on hand. It’s a great way to escape.
- For this situation I am grateful for the little things and the technology available.
- I am used to hurricanes, which generally require preparations to not have running water and power during typically the hottest months of the year. So being able to have no concerns (at least yet) on no power or running water is pretty awesome.
- Fortunately, this happened now and not in the early 1990s. I remember those times – before social media and dialup and mass use of the internet. Can you imagine how society would be handling this without these modern conveniences?
During situations like this, the above is certainly not a complete list. There are so many more lessons we all learn based on our respective life experiences, environments and other things.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
Thank you for reading my blog and sharing your story. Getting out to the beach is certainly one way people have been coping with the self-isolation and lockdowns. The things we once took for granted in the pre-pandemic world have certainly become things that we are more grateful for, and hopefully take less for granted now. But the story of the hermit crab still inside the shell is definitely a new one for me. I don’t think I have heard of that in all the years I have lived in beach areas! Made me laugh for sure. Everyone can use a good smile these days too.
