Food Preservation & Gardening

We have a great reliance on the conveniences of the modern world. Our refrigerators and freezers can store foods for days to months depending on the food item, but methods of food preservation were mostly done with various other means:

  • Ice houses
  • Salting of meat
  • Canning
  • Cellars
  • Dehydration

How many days can you and your people survive on the food in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry in the event of a long-term power outage? How would you fare if the present food distribution channels were no longer available and the grocery stores we rely on didn’t have the items we are accustomed to having easy access to?

Do you have the knowledge and skill to preserve the food that you have to make it last as long as possible? Do you have the means to provide yourself with the necessary food requirements in the event that the grocery stores we rely on are no longer functioning as normal and all food distribution channels as we know them have discontinued?

In the time of the Great Depression, it was those with gardens that had the greatest means of survival, since they had their own food supply and weren’t reliant on the bread lines others relied on in the cities. They were further benefited by knowing how to preserve their harvests through means of canning and such noted earlier, which gave them the food they needed when winter came and there was little to nothing to harvest depending on one’s climate.

If possible, create a garden of any size you can create; of course, the larger the better – but anything is still better than nothing.

My present living situation only permits a windowsill and patio version of a garden. Herbs are mostly what I have right now, but I have been able to get beans and tomatoes when it is their season. I am trying potatoes, but not sure how well that will work.

I hope one day I will be able to have a large garden and possibly a greenhouse so I can reduce what I must get from the grocery stores as much as possible. Since I am unable to have this ideal situation right now, I spend some of my free time researching and filling notebooks with information on gardening, greenhouses, and aquaponics; lately, my interest is mostly on companion planting.

How do you plan to supply you and your people with a long term food supply?

Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this blog could certainly be one of the most beneficial in its niche. Good blog!

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. Thank you for the suggestion for pics and video. I am certainly considering it, but working on how to best get it on my blog posts so it isn’t too distracting and works well on both desktop and mobile formats, as I am still relatively new to website/blog design. I suppose I will need to spend more time researching that.
