Man-Made Disasters

Man-made disasters are a different category altogether. These are usually in the form of things like:

  • Economic collapse
  • Banking System/Federal Reserve
  • Martial law
  • Riots

There are likely many more man-made disasters that we can face, but personally, I think Economic Collapse and Inflation are the ones that have greater odds of happening.

Economic Collapse and Inflation

By no means am I an expert on this topic, and I am sure there are others who have studied this more in-depth than I have, but I do want to share what I have learned so far.

Economic Collapse

Generally speaking, the economy works in a pattern, like so many other things we experience. Every year, we know there will be a Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – those seasons happen every year.

The pattern of the economy is that a full cycle of boom, peak, trough, recovery happens about every 10-ish years. Every generation (about 25 years), you can expect to see a depression or a recession. Over a lifetime, you can likely expect to see 2 recessions and 1 depression.

As of October 2019, it’s been just about 10 years since the “Great Recession” of 2008-2009. The lowest point in the DJIA was December 2009 as I recall.

Given these patterns, essentially, we are due for another one basically at any time…..and there are some experts that say that should our next economic collapse be an economic depression, it could be worse than the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Should this be the case, and it is worse than the Great Depression of the 1930s, I think it would be worse for two major reasons:

No More Gold Standard

For anyone that isn’t aware, President Nixon took us “temporarily” off the Gold Standard in 1971. Up until that time, the United States currency and money supply was valued and available, respectively, based on the gold holdings of the country.

Once the country went off the gold standard, the Federal Reserve was able to print as many dollars as their printers would allow at their discretion, with no regard to the gold reserves the country has.

The US dollar, since 1971 has been backed by the FAITH AND GOOD CREDIT OF THE UNITED STATES. Now, if this statement doesn’t scare you into a cold sweat at the very least, consider that the US Debt as of the time stamp of this post is $22,835,838,565,510…..and the US has a AA+ credit rating by Standard and Poor’s.

By comparison, this is like saying that an individual has almost $23 Trillion in debt with a perfect personal credit rating, which would in reality NEVER happen.

The currency for the United States is a fiat currency and has ZERO value should other countries lose confidence in the United States economy and currency.

General Population have No Skills

Now, there are skills that people have, but by comparison to the 1930s – we as a general population are in trouble.

The Millennials and Gen Z (and likely all if not most of the generations that follow) will continue to have problems with what is affectionately called “Adulting”.

Being a Millennial myself (well, technically I am considered a Xennial), I am certainly not exempt from my moments of “adulting is hard”. Mostly, I just really don’t want to do “adulting” things, not so much that I can’t do them (or at the very least figure it out).

I have the capability to cook, but the variety is very low in all honesty. Fortunately, I can read and follow a recipe…and I am very proud of myself for finally getting the yeast to hot water thing right when making bread from scratch (third time really was the charm in my case). However, I don’t think there are many that are in my generation or younger that would be able to have the patience or the ability to follow a recipe. Hopefully I am wrong.

In the event of a Great Depression, we have fewer gardens and the skill to work and cultivate gardens. I have personally unintentionally killed a couple of rosemary plants, at least one basil plant, an apple tree and have yet to successfully grow potatoes or tomatoes. I have, however, been able to keep alive my lavender and mint plants, and was able to revive my aloe plant….so, small wins!

Beyond this, the women of the Great Depression were mostly housewives. They knew how to make meals out of basic ingredients, they knew how to preserve them, make the food stretch over time and they also had the skills to sew, knit, crochet and “upcycle” practically everything before it became a buzzword in the early 2000s.

The general theme of the time was “use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”.

I don’t think people would be able to live that way when everyone is attempting to literally like the Kardashians and other Hollywood elites.

Further, no one has much skill to fix things. Over time, starting in the post-WW2 world, items were made less and less fixable. It’s become cheaper to buy a new one than it is to get the part that needs repair and fix it.

My parents got a microwave about a month before I was born in 1985. We had that microwave until about 2010. A part broke and the parts were no longer made, so we had to get a new one. If the parts were still made, I am not sure if it would have been cheaper to get a new part or a new microwave of crappier quality, but it likely would’ve come out in favor of the crappy quality microwave.

There are likely many more skills that my generation and the younger generations don’t have, which will put us in a not good situation should an economic depression occur on the next go around.

Banking System/Federal Reserve

There is a lot that the general population doesn’t understand about how money works in the country. By no means am I an expert, but I seem more informed than the average person on the street from my observations.

The Federal Reserve, despite the name, is not part of the Federal Government of the United States. They are “as federal as Federal Express” as the saying goes. They report to no one and they are responsible to no one (but this depends on who you talk to).

I am personally not a fan of the Federal Reserve…..I see them as the drug dealers of the economy. The drug is what is deemed money (the dollars in your pocket or bank account) that gets injected into circulation.

When it comes to the banking system, I see it as a necessary evil considering the general operation of society. There isn’t much possibility to get around it. Do I trust the banks….not really.

But they have that guarantee of $250k from the Great Depression, why wouldn’t you trust them?

Remember those bank holidays in Greece around 2013/2014? They closed the banks and people lined up at the ATMs like bread lines and could only get $50 max out of their accounts per day….once the ATM ran out of money, that was it. And, as far as I recall, the debit cards didn’t work at grocery stores. If they did, there were likely similar spending limits on them too.

Imagine if you woke up and all of a sudden had that happen…does that $250k guarantee make you feel better? Does that pay your bills? Does that feed you and your family?

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that you enjoy the content. I will certainly keep in mind the length of the blog posts. Some are longer than others. I try not make them too long winded but as “to the point” as possible while also allowing for consideration of other perspectives. If I need the length to make a point, I certainly will – however, I try to keep short due to generally short attention spans.

  18. First off I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was interested to know how you center yourself and
clear your mind before writing. I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out.
I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply
just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints?

    Thanks!

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that you enjoy my survival and prepping content.
As far as writing is concerned, I have done various forms of writing for so long I don’t really think about it much anymore. Generally, I just write whatever comes to mind, let it flow and then when I am done, I go back and edit, move things around and the like. The thing I have found about writing is that you get better by just writing.

      Courtney Davenport

  19. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your blog?

Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you
could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?

I will certainly review the layout and spacing of photos, but would need to re-check the post you are commenting on as I don’t recall having photos associated with that particular blog post. It may be that I need to review the layout on desktop vs tablet vs mobile devices.

The content that I provide is of my own making, so I am not sure if you are looking for a writer or how I write. If it is the latter, I just tend to write. Sometimes it is an outline and I go from there, other times it’s just free-flowing. It seems to be different depending on the topic and other factors. However, if you are looking for writers, I suggest Fiverr or the English department of a local university.

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is helpful for your survival prepping journey! The post that you made this comment on is one of my first blog posts.
I am sure some of the topics are boring, although sometimes necessary – like laundry and raking the yard. Not fun, but necessary for clean clothes and a tidy yard. Since some topics can be boring, I do try to make them more interesting or add a bit of humor in there if I can. Hopefully I will not disappoint in my coming blog posts.

  28. My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on a number of websites for about
a year and am worried about switching to another platform.

I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net.
Is there a way I can import all my wordpress posts into it?

Any kind of help would be really appreciated!

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is helpful for your survival prepping journey!
I unfortunately can’t speak to the recommendation of your developer. I haven’t heard of blogengine.net, so I can’t speak to that either. The best I can offer is to do your research and make the best decision you can for your situation.

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that it provided useful information for your survival prepping journey!
The issue that you reference is a new one brought to my attention. As far as I am aware, that shouldn’t be an issue with the template that I am using, but will review the settings just in case.
I think I have had that happen on sites I have visited, sometimes it was fixed by a device restart since updates were needed, or sometimes just by refreshing the page.

      Courtney Davenport

  32. The next time I read a blog, I hope that it does not fail me as
much as this one. After all, I know it was my choice to read through, nonetheless I genuinely thought you’d have something useful to talk about.
All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you
could fix if you weren’t too busy searching for
    attention.

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am sorry to hear that you find this post to be whining. That is certainly not the intention of the post, nor seeking attention. I do note some moments I have myself of having difficulty with everyday life things, like most people have, as I find it impossible (in my experience) to do everything perfectly. The section on cooking, for example, I note that it took me three tries to get the yeast right when making my own bread.
As far as economic collapse and the federal reserve – there is little that a single person can do on their own. Those areas were to shed light on things that I see as a man-made disaster that is just as out of the control of the general public as a hurricane or snowstorm. From my observation, not many people are aware of the economic patterns or how the Federal Reserve works.
I hope you were able to find something useful to your survival preparation journey in my other blog posts though.

Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web
site looks weird when browsing from my iphone4. I’m trying to find a theme or

Thank you for sharing my site with your former roommate. I have found that this topic is ever growing in popularity for different reasons. So I like to be prepared for something that may never happen as opposed to being unprepared for something that may or may not happen. If it does, there will likely be problems that can be the difference between life and death.

  38. Hi there outstanding blog! Does running a blog similar to this
take a lot of work? I’ve no understanding of computer programming but I was hoping to start my own blog in the
near future. Anyway, if you have any ideas or tips for new
blog owners please share. I know this is off subject however
I simply needed to ask. Many thanks!

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is useful for your survival prepping journey.
It does take some time to write the blog posts, maintain social media pages and anything else that you want to setup with a site. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about programming with WordPress.
The only tips I have is the one I have been given: Just start and figure it out along the way, making changes and adjustments as you go.

  39. I almost never leave remarks, but i did some searching and wound up here Man-Made Disasters – Disaster Survival Answers.
And I do have a few questions for you if you do not mind.
Is it simply me or does it look as if like a few of these remarks look like they are coming from brain dead people?

😛 And, if you are posting on additional places, I would
like to keep up with anything new you have to post. Would you list of
the complete urls of your communal pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is useful for your survival prepping journey.
From my perspective, I don’t think I have come across any comments from “brain-dead” people. I have seen posts from people that are in the process of learning.

  50. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my
blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates. I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for
quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this.

I am not aware of any widgets on WordPress for twitter. I usually just grab the link for the new blog post and make a post ready and use the scheduler available for a tweet.

  52. Hey there! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing many months of hard work due to no backup.

Do you have any methods to stop hackers?

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is valuable to your survival preparation journey.
I haven’t had any issues with hackers for my site. Hopefully you have found a solution, as I currently don’t have any recommendations.
However, I hope you have found a system to get your stuff backed up on a regular basis.

  54. First off I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask
if you don’t mind. I was curious to find out how you center
yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I have had difficulty
clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.

I do take pleasure in writing however it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips?
    Kudos!

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. I am glad to hear that my content is valuable to your survival preparation journey.
As for writing, I have been doing it for so long it is one of those things that “just happens”. Of course, different every time. However, when I have difficulty with writing, I find it helpful to begin with an outline or a general sentence or something to help spark inspiration. Sometimes, it takes a walk around the neighborhood or something else to “clear my head” and let the ideas flow.
Generally, I will always have a pen and notepaper (sometimes napkins) around to write down whatever may flicker in my head so I don’t forget it. If you go this route, be sure that you have some kind of organizational system. I use index cards a lot since they are handy – they are everywhere because I haven’t created a filing system of any kind. Over time, some of them have become gibberish – so as much detail as possible when you use this method too.

you were to write a killer title? I am not suggesting your information isn’t good., however what
if you added a headline to maybe get folk’s attention? I mean Man-Made Disasters –
Disaster Survival Answers is a little plain. You ought to peek at
Yahoo’s front page and watch how they write post titles to grab viewers to open the links.
You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to grab readers interested about everything’ve written. Just my opinion, it might make your posts
    a little bit more interesting.

I don’t recall sourcing anything in this blog post and will have to review it to double check. The bottom line is that disasters that may require survival skills and preparation aren’t necessarily from natural disasters. They can also result from various man-made things like the riots, martial law, and other things I mention in this post. It is good to be prepared for all of them. But that is my personal opinion.

I haven’t had hacker issues, but would recommend creating a backup system of some kind.

  77. Howdy! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was
wondering which blog platform are you using for this site?
I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers
and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic
if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
